What Are Floorcloths?

Originally made of sailcloth to cover dirt floors, today floorcloths are a great way to jazz up a room. They also make great conversation pieces and yes, you can walk all over them.

Floorcloths date back as far as 14th century France where painted oil cloths were used as decorative wall hangings and table coverings. These functional art pieces evolved into floor cloths and were introduced to North America in the 18th century.

Today, floorcloths are the design solution to all of your flooring needs. They are flat enough to allow chairs to slide over them in the dining room. They clean up easily, which is wonderful for families with pets or small children. They don't trap dirt or pet hair the way carpets can and most of all, as with all artwork, floorcloths make a beautiful addition to your home.

At Jarea Art Studio, we have been designing and creating floorcloths for 15 years. We use only the highest quality artist canvas and paints. We do not use stencils or stamps to create our floorcloths. Each cloth is individually hand stretched on a wood stretcher and painted with brushes, not rollers. We seal our cloths front and back with many coats of sealer and we finish the edges using adhesives to assure your cloth lays flat -- without a case of the "ripples". Because we care about the environment, we use only non-toxic and environmentally friendly sealers and adhesives. We wouldn't have it any other way.

Our floorcloths are durable (see below), even in high traffic areas. They can be stepped on, spilled on and mucked up... just clean with a damp soapy sponge or mop. It's that simple.
